Research Governance is the means by which organisations and individuals ensure the delivery of high quality research.

The importance of Research Governance

Research Governance aims to continuously improve standards and minimise unjustifiable variations in research practice. London South Bank University (LSBU) pursues good Research Governance to:

  • set out the principles, requirements and standards of good practice in research in our organisation
  • define mechanisms by which our organisation and individuals address the standards and obligations for undertaking research
  • improve research quality by providing a framework for the conduct of research which should enhance ethical and scientific quality; promote good practice in research; reduce adverse incidents; ensure lessons are learned and prevent poor performance and misconduct

Who it applies to

Research Governance applies to LSBU as we are an organisation that hosts research. It also extends to all our staff who undertake or manage research within our organisation and is applicable to bodies that fund research proposals or infrastructure.

It is the responsibility of individuals to ensure they are aware of the standards they are expected to adhere to and maintain.

What it covers

Research Governance at LSBU involves the following five domains:

  • good scientific practice
  • research ethics
  • research information
  • health and safety
  • finance

Relevant mechanisms within LSBU are outlined below:

Scientific Practice
The University's policy on Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice sets out the principles of Good Scientific Practice; the structure and environment requirements for research; the education and training needs of researchers; handling of primary research data; responsibility for publication and matters relating to Integrity and Standards in Public Life.
Research Ethics
The University takes research ethics very seriously in order to both respect the dignity and rights of participants and ensure their safety and well-being, and to protect the reputation of the University.
All research at LSBU involving human participants requires Ethics clearance BEFORE any research is undertaken.
How to obtain Research Ethics Clearance
There are two levels of Research Ethics Clearance currently in operation at LSBU for research involving human participants. Apply to the University Ethics Panel (UEP) for MRes, MPhil, PhD, Professional Doctorate and staff research that falls within the following categories:
  • NHS sponsored
  • Addresses: terrorism and radicalisation; administration of substances altered at LSBU
  • Requires additional insurance cover over and above the University standard
  • Involves human tissue in any form
In some cases, particularly those involving research in or with the NHS, approval from an NHS Research Ethics Committee must be obtained in advance of any work being carried out. Also apply to the UEP as an external researcher wishing to involve LSBU staff and/or students. Apply to the School Ethics Panel for Undergraduate research and taught Masters dissertation studies and, with the exception of applications falling into the categories outlined above, research by MRes, MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate students and members of staff.

Research Information

There are many aspects of research information but the most common are data protection, confidentiality and intellectual property.

Data Protection
The University's overarching Data Protection Policy, as agreed by the Policy and Resources Committee of the Board of Governors in July 2010, is available on our Data Protection web page.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality and security of information is essential. Data used for research purposes should be dealt with in accordance with the Data Protection Act (1998). Advice is given on our Data Protection web page.
There are also likely to be contractual requirements around confidentiality and the storage/security of information associated with individual research contracts that must be adhered to. Contact the Research, Enterprise and Innovation department via rei@lsbu.ac.uk if you need further guidance.
Intellectual Property
Consideration must be given to the appropriate protection and exploitation of any Intellectual Property Rights derived from research. For further information please contact Syeda Rahimunnessa on 020 7815 6910 or email syedara@lsbu.ac.uk.

Here are some of the key issues/points relevant to research proposals and awards at LSBU:

  • Research Proposals should set out the funding arrangements for the research. Costing of proposals must be made in consultation with the Research, Enterprise and Innovation department.
  • School approval is required for all externally-funded research applications
  • Costs in relation to research projects must not be incurred until a fully signed contract is in place.
  • Research Contracts can only be signed by a member of the University's Executive.

Open Access

As part of its commitment to widening the availability of academic research, LSBU has adopted the Open Access policy. Open Access means many without privileged access to academic publications can reach prestigious research findings for free. This way, important new sector knowledge can be shared further at no extra cost.

Health and Safety

The Health and Safety of Participants, researchers and other staff must be given priority at all times. It is a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) that health and safety guidelines must be strictly observed.

Research is subject to the University's overall Health and Safety Policy and Procedures which is available to LSBU researchers on our staff intranet.

This includes guidance on matters that may relate to research, such as, lone working; risk assessment; accident and incident reporting; and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).

Finance

Good financial management and procedures are necessary to ensure financial probity and compliance with the law.
